Officials at the Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium have announced the birth of the first black rhinoceros at the facility in 47 years.
Zoo officials announced Wednesday that a Rhino names Azizi gave birth on Saturday to a 70-pound female calf.
Zoo officials say there are about 4,800 black rhino still in the world. Zoo president and chief executive officer Barbara Baker says the species is "critically endangered" due to poaching and other causes that prompted the world's population of the animals to drop by 96 percent from 1970 to 1992.
Staff are carefully monitoring the calf from a distance so she will properly bond with her mother. The calf will not be on public display until zoo officials determine that a health bond has taken place and when weather and temperatures are ideal.
