Emergency Drill To Take Place Thursday At Pittsburgh International Airport

On Thursday evening, a required, routine emergency drill will be occurring at Pittsburgh International Airport. Officials want people to know so they are not alarmed, adding that the drill will not interfere with air traffic and will zero effect on travelers.

About 150 people including law enforcement from nearby municipalities and airport officials will participate in the four hour mock incident. The drill will start at 5 p.m.

The airport is required to hold an emergency drill by the Federal Aviation Authority every three years. Some FAA officials will be on hand to observe and provide feedback.

A different scenario is acted out every round. This year’s scenario is that a plane had an aborted takeoff because of a tire problem and the plane skidded off and caught on fire. There will be mock evacuations, triage and disaster response.

Pittsburgh International Airport spokesperson Bob Kerlik said preparedness is important.

“Aside from the FAA regulations, we want to make sure that we’re ready in the event of a disaster,” he said.
