Former Duquesne President John Murray Dies

Duquesne University

John E. Murray, former president of Duquesne University, died Wednesday at age 82.

When he was named to the post in 1988, Murray became the first non-clergy president of the Catholic university. He retired as president in 2001 and was appointed university chancellor, a post he held until his death.

While president, Murray chaired ComPAC 21, the Home Rule Charter Commission, whose work led to the change in Allegheny County government from a three-commissioner based model to the current chief executive and 15-member council.

“Duquesne—and Pittsburgh—lost an incredibly talented leader, teacher, scholar, author and lawyer today,” said Charles J. Dougherty, Duquesne University president. “His contributions here at Duquesne, as well as his service on numerous government, charitable and legal boards and committees have improved the lives of many over the course of his remarkable career.”

Prior to coming to Duquesne, Murray served as dean and professor of law at the University of Pittsburgh and Villanova University. He taught law for more than 50 years and authored 20 books, mostly on contract law.

John Murray was a partner in the Murray, Hogue and Lannis law firm and represented many international firms in contract matters including U.S. Steel., ALCOA, General Motors, Bayer and Nissan.

At the time of publication details on funeral arrangements were pending.
