With winter on the way, there’s no better time to escape the early snows by flying south, taking in gorgeous views, or embracing the snowy winter, with high alpine excursions.

Travel contributor Elaine Labalme shares her top four favorite pre-holiday destinations.

1. El Torvar Hotel - Just twenty feet from the rim, you’d be hard pressed to find an easier walk to stunning Arizona sunrises over the Grand Canyon.

2. Inn and Spa at Loretto - Unwind after a day of riding Santa Fe’s trails at this world class spa, then settle down for a special Thanksgiving Feast at the inn’s Luminaria restaurant-- fused with local dishes like blue-corn crusted trout.

3. The Homestead - Play a round on Virginia’s finest mountain golf course in the summer, hit 45 acres of ski slopes in the winter, or swim year-round in The Homestead’s heated outdoor pools to relax before the holidays.

4. Bretton Arms Inn - Cut fresh powder through New Hampshire’s White Mountain National Forest, or take in the alpine views from a horse-drawn sleigh ride.
