Experience all things Wilkinsburg this weekend at “Link on Penn,” a community event celebrating local businesses and organizations in the Pittsburgh suburb.
Tim Murdoch, Steering Committee member for Leadership Development Initiative says this partnership with the Wilkinsburg community was inspired by the positivity and good news arising from the neighborhood.
“We’re looking to challenge perceptions of some outlying communities as well,” Murdoch said. “So we’re inviting everyone from the city to come in and see everything great going on in Wilkinsburg.”
Marita Garrett, Wilkinsburg Council Vice President said the event stemmed from the “PopUp! Pittsburgh” initiative as well as the success of events like the Wilkingburg Vacant Home Tour.
They’re also partnering with The Wilkinsburg Ministerium and Sanctuary Project and the Wilkinsburg Community Development Corporation. All of the organizations, Garrett explained, bring something different to the community and will share their experiences with attendees Saturday.
Although recent tragic events have rocked the community of Wilkinsburg, Garrett said the community remains optimistic as it heals.
“One thing about Wilkinsburg is that we are a resilient community,” Garrett added. “We have to keep moving forward to make sure that it is a safe place for all.”
Trying to change outsider perspectives is difficult, but Garrett and Murdoch encourage Pittsburghers to give Wilkinsburg a chance.
“You can’t always run away from a neighborhood that you think is bad. It’s Pittsburgh. It’s a city and region of neighborhoods,” Garrett said.
Attendees can pick up a “Passport to Wilkinsburg,” which Murdoch described as a resource meant to introduce local businesses and cultural organizations. He hopes the exposure improves traffic to the local economy.
“Link on Penn” will be held Saturday, May 21 from 1-4 p.m. on the corner of Center Street and Penn Ave and features free food, art, activities and live music.
