Maria Gabriel Scapellato To Join 90.5 WESA

JAN. 23, 2017 - PITTSBURGH, PA:  John Sutton, newly-appointed General Manager of 90.5 WESA, Pittsburgh’s NPR News Station, today announced that veteran journalist and radio host Maria Gabriel Scapellato will join the staff as Morning Edition Host starting in late March.

Christopher Ayers, who has been filling in as Morning Edition host since the departure of Josh Raulerson in November, will resume his role as Producer for the daily news program, which airs on 90.5 WESA from 5am-10am weekdays.  Ayers joined the station as Morning Edition Producer last April, having previously served as morning news anchor at WFYI in Indianapolis, IN.

In making the announcement, Sutton stated, “We are very happy to have Maria joining our team.  She is an experienced broadcast journalist, she is from Pittsburgh, and she has a passion for NPR and public radio. We're excited to bring her local knowledge and perspective to WESA's Morning Edition listeners.”

Maria Gabriel Scapellato began her radio career at a commercial radio station in Harrisburg in 1985.  Later, she moved to WITF 89.5 FM as the local host of All Things Considered, returning to Pittsburgh in 1992, where she has since worked in both radio and television at various Pittsburgh stations as a general assignment reporter. Originally from West Mifflin in the Mon Valley, she studied Journalism at West Virginia University.
