Position Overview
The News Director has lead responsibility for the journalistic integrity of all station platforms and for executing WESA’s news strategy on-air and on digital platforms. This full-time exempt position reports to the General Manager and supervises (either directly or through deputies) all news department staff, including the Morning Edition and All Things Considered hosts.

Major Responsibilities

Editorial Planning, Scheduling, Editing (60%)

  • Responsible for news planning, establishing beats, story editing and ensuring that the newsroom meets WESA’s ethical, editorial, artistic, technical and production standards, needs and deadlines, both on-air and online.
  • Directs the activities of the news staff to develop story ideas, evaluate pitches, assign stories, track issues and events, edit stories and schedule them for air.  The News Director also has lead responsibility for planning enterprise projects and coverage of scheduled major events that allows lead time for preparation.
  • Serves as a primary editor to ensure news reports are produced in an effective, timely and responsible manner.
  • Works collaboratively with the Program Director to ensure that hosts understand and meet the PD’s standards for on-air performance.
  • Assists the General Manager and Program Director in programming decisions, and makes sure the newsroom both understands and delivers on its duties with regard to programming (including pledge).
  • Manages WESA’s relationship with NPR’s regional editor, its desks and program producers, and other national shows on the WESA program schedule that use local content.
  • Assists the General Manager in identifying and reaching working agreements with potential news partners, then managing those partnerships on a day-to-day basis.
  • Communicates proactively with other WESA departments (marketing, promotion, development, programming etc.) about the newsroom’s plans, needs and accomplishments.
  • Takes part as requested by the GM in executive staff discussions of policy, strategy and priorities.

Administration of Personnel, Budget, Technology (20%)

  • Ensures newsroom personnel are scheduled in a way that meets WESA’s needs.
  • Sets goals for and evaluates the performance of newsroom staff.  Personnel management includes recruitment and hiring.
  • Manages the news department budget — including annual planning, periodic monitoring, and routine handling.
  • Helps maintain equipment and information systems vital to news planning, newsgathering, news production and news presentation.

Reporting, Anchoring (10%)

  • Contributes content on an occasional basis.
  • Fills in as a newscast anchor or program host as needed.

Community Relations and Support (10%)

  • Helps ensure that WESA has an open, responsive and civil relationship with its community and member of its audience.
  • Participates in station events and fundraising activities as appropriate.

Qualifications and Skills Required

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent with at least 5 years’ full-time professional experience in journalism, preferably in a multi-platform (radio + web) local news environment.
  • Experience in broadcast production, news writing and editing.
  • Collaborative management style, able to work well with other internal departments and with external partners.
  • Familiarity with public radio news programming standards and values, digital production and multimedia storytelling.
  • Practical grasp of social media.
  • Ability to work in a live program environment.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Understanding of the principles of departmental budgets, and ability to monitor and respond to spending trends on a periodic basis. 
  • Excellent memory for details, ability to meet daily deadlines under stressful conditions and deal effectively with multiple tasks simultaneously.

Organization Overview
Pittsburgh Community Broadcasting Corporation (PCBC) is an independent public media organization located in the historic South Side of Pittsburgh, PA. Founded in 1974, PCBC began broadcasting to the region on 91.3FM and remains committed to providing fresh alternative music to the community. WYEP, with the tagline “Where the Music Matters,” is an AAA format station, curating alternative music, educating the community, and presenting a large number of community events and concerts.

In 2011, PCBC acquired the 90.5 FM frequency from Duquesne University. It was re-launched as 90.5 WESA. The news/NPR format is dedicated to informing people in ways that engage and inspire dialog about community issues. As southwestern Pennsylvania’s only independent public radio news and information station, it gives voice to provocative ideas that foster a vibrant, informed, diverse and caring community.

Both stations broadcast from the 19,000 square-foot Community Broadcast Center (CBC), which was built in 2006 as the first LEED-NC Silver certified “green station” in the nation. The CBC has easy access to downtown Pittsburgh, the University of Pittsburgh, Carnegie Mellon University, Duquesne University, and a variety of local restaurants and live music venues. Combined listenership is nearly 200,000, membership exceeds 15,000, and all content is delivered by 46 employees and many loyal volunteers.
