Panel Passes New District Map

The Legislative Reapportionment Commission voted Monday 3-to-2 in favor of Republican-designed preliminary plans for the 50 seats in the state Senate and 203 in the House. Democrats say the proposals are politically partisan and hope they'll change before the final plan is adopted in the coming months.

The Senate plan moves Democratic incumbent Jim Brewster's 45th district from McKeesport to Monroe County in Eastern Pennsylvania.

In the House, State Rep. Chelsa Wagner's 22nd legislative district will move to Allentown and the 46th and the 45th districts will be merged, pitting Democrats Jesse White and Nick Kotik in a primary race in April. Wagner is leaving her seat with an eye on the Allegheny County Controller's office.

Philadelphia and Erie will also each lose a district.

The commission includes all four caucus floor leaders. The fifth member, Superior Court president judge emeritus Stephen McEwen, cast the deciding vote.
