Recent Art Institute Grad to Show Work at New York Fashion Week

A recent Art Institute of Pittsburgh graduate will be showing a fashion collection at New York Fashion Week.

“A lot of the clothes that I design are a little bit avant-garde or experimental, so the collection that I did for New York Fashion Week is all surrounded by experimental silhouettes and a lot of different textiles in use together,” said Romina Vairo, who has never shown at Fashion Week before.

Vairo, who grew up in Squirrel Hill and graduated from the Art Institute in 2014 will be showing six “looks” on Feb. 17 in a show that will also show “looks” from 11 other art students or recent graduates.

“Most of us have worked on this collection for quite some time so its not just your typical kids still trying to figure out what their aesthetic is, we all have very clear ideas,” she said.

Vairo describes her clothes as “dark” and “experimental.” She hopes that after this show, she will get a job working as a designer in New York.

Mercedes-Benz New York Fashion Week starts Thursday.
