'Shared Border, Shared Dreams' Finds New Downtown Home

La Roche College

City officials unveiled a new cultural exhibit in the main lobby of the City-County Building as part of its ongoing Welcoming Pittsburgh immigration initiative.

On display through July 24, "Shared Border, Shared Dreams" features panels with information about the history of immigration in Pittsburgh, the modern reform movement and the history of the Mexican American border.

The exhibit was designed by La Roche College graphic design students and displayed in 2013.

“Through the research, through testimonials and interviews with immigrants, they really began to empathize with the immigrants," said LaRoche Assistant Professor Beth Shirrell, who guided the project. "They found that as college students pursuing their dreams of a college degree, they shared a lot of similarities to immigrants who are coming to the United States of America.”

Welcoming Pittsburgh is a city project announced last week bent on improving the lives of area immigrants and refugees through a series of short-, mid- and long-term projects.
