Shorts Today, Coats Tomorrow: Pittsburgh Prepares For Possible First Snowfall

With a possibility of the region’s first snowfall this weekend, Pennsylvania Department of Transportation officials said they’re prepared for winter weather.

Forecasts predict rain showers and a possibility of snow on Saturday, with colder temperatures and more chance of snow on Sunday.

“Although the unexpected warm weather is allowing us to continue working on construction projects, winter preparation has been a focus of ours since August,” said PennDOT District Executive Dan Cessna.

Though Friday's temperatures are expected to reach the 70s, this weekend could bring the region's first snowfall of the season.

As snow hits this winter, drivers can track plow trucks online. PennDOT has 124 plow trucks that cover Allegheny, Beaver and Lawrence counties. All three counties are prepared with a total of nearly 60,000 tons of salt, PennDOT officials said.

Though the weekend weather might have some Pittsburghers picking up bread, milk and toilet paper, Friday’s Light Up Night celebration may have Pittsburghers reaching for their shorts and tank tops. Forecasts call for temperatures in the 70s.
