Special Panel To Assess Whether Kane’s Law License Matters

The state Senate has named the members of a special committee tasked with investigating how the attorney general’s suspended law license affects her ability to do her job.

The chairman says the panel will report its findings in 30 days -- a first step toward considering Kathleen Kane’s removal from office.

Top Senate GOP aide Drew Crompton says leaders decided to create the special committee once the suspension of Kane’s law license went into effect last week.

“There was a sense on the members’ part that until it actually was effective, it probably was too soon,” Crompton said.

The six-person committee includes three Republicans, three Democrats and an ex-officio Republican tie-breaker. It’s not clear how public the panel will make its work.

Crompton said lawmakers have concerns “on both sides” of the transparency argument: “one, making sure that there’s a public aspect to all this, and also, two, being able to protect individuals who’d like to come forward and add information.”

Kane is contesting multiple criminal counts of perjury and other charges.
