Throughout the commonwealth there are a number of places with historic significance in danger of fading away.
Neglect, weather, and the wrecking ball pose a seemingly continual threat to the existence of these sites. How will Pittsburgh save these cultural treasures?
Preservation Pennsylvania field representative Erin Hammerstedt, gives some insight to what historic places in Western Pennsylvania are in danger.
“The three that are in Western Pennsylvania include the VA’s Highland Drive Hospital Campus in Pittsburgh, the Coraopolis Railroad Station in Coraopolis in Allegheny County, and Altman’s Mill, which is a historic gristmill in Saltsburg, in Indiana County.”
Hammerstedt says places like Penn Station, Downtown have shown that they “can really serve as economic and community assets.” So she believes that the Coraopolis Railroad Station deserves to be saved.
“I think because of the significance of the building architecturally, certainly it’s something that stands out in the community. But also because the train station, they’re often really heavy recognized buildings. You know they’re places where people would often come and go, sort of marking a gateway into the community.”
