What Can Be Gleaned From A Whirlwind PA Primary?

Pennsylvania voters chose Republican and Democrat nominees for U.S Senate, 18 seats in the U.S. House,  governor and lieutenant governor, plus half the state Senate and the entire state House.

Journalists Salena Zito of the Washington Examiner, Chris Potter of 90.5 WESA and Brad Bumsted of The Caucus explore the implications from a few of the key races.

Coming up...

Of the 130 municipalities in Allegheny County, 18 have neighboring police departments patrolling their streets; two rely on state police troopers; and one regional police department in the northern suburbs covers four communities. Now four neighborhoods along the Route 28 corridor--Aspinwall, Blawnox, O’Hara and Sharpsburg--have signed a letter of intent to create a regional police department, with Fox Chapel on their heals. University of Pittsburgh law professor and 90.5 WESA legal analyst David Harris explains police sharing is a growing trend.

And local leaders initially eyed SCI Pittsburgh's state-owned acreage for riverfront development, but one year since the prison's closure, there seems to be no progress. Reporter Kate Giammerise of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette joins Harris to explain why the 136-year-old property is likely to remain on the market.

And later in the program...

The U.S. Supreme Court struck down a law that bars gambling on football, basketball, baseball and other sports in most states this week, cementing expectations of Pennsylvania lawmakers who prospectively legalized sports betting last October in a sweeping casino expansion law.

Gary Rotstein with the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette and Wes Venteicher of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review join to talk about the industry and what could come next as Pennsylvania moves forward.

The Confluence, where the news comes together, is 90.5 WESA’s weekly news program. Each week, reporters, editors and storytellers join veteran journalist and host Kevin Gavin to take an in-depth look at stories important to the Pittsburgh region. Find more episodes of The Confluence here.
