Reza Aslan on The Life & Times of Jesus of Nazareth

Religious scholar and best-selling author, Reza Aslan challenges many long-held assumptions about the leader of the Christian religion in his book Zealot: The Life and Times of Jesus of Nazareth.

He has received criticism for his frank examination of the 1st century Jewish leader because he does not paint Jesus as a celestial “deity on earth.”

Instead, Aslan has illustrated the political and social importance of his life. “When you’re ushering in the rule of God, you’re ushering out the rule of Caesar,” he explains.

Black & Gold Devotion and the Steeler Fan Diaspora

How would you describe the ultimate Steeler fan?

For Steelers fans living outside the city, it isn’t hard to find a nearby Steelers bar. But with more than 700 in the United States, Pittsburgh devotees can connect across the country to cheer on the iconic football franchise.

This diaspora of fans grew out of the economic decline of the 1970s and '80s when many Pittsburghers had to leave the city to find jobs.

But as PRX reporter Lauren Ober observes, “You can leave Pittsburgh, but the black and gold never leaves you.”

Social Issues at the Top of Agenda for Gathering of Lutherans in Pittsburgh

More than 3,000 people are gathering in Pittsburgh for the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America biennial church-wide assembly.

Each time the group meets, it releases a statement on a specific social issue.

“(This year) we will be considering a proposed social statement called ‘The Church and Criminal Justice: Hearing the Cries,’ said Kurt Kusserow, bishop of the local synod. "This is a social statement that tries to understand both the experience of victims in our criminal justice system and the justice system itself.”
