A new litter of 32 rescued cats and kittens has put Pittsburgh's Animal Friends over its tipping point, spokeswoman Shannon Tremblay said Tuesday.

The Ohio Township-based shelter is hosting a “Twice as Nice” event through Sunday, offering a free second adoption if you pay for the first.

What better way to start your Saturday than with bacon? The America Loves Bacon Tour arrives in Station Square from 1pm-6pm. Guests can sample bacon from vendors across the country, attend musical performances by six local bands or compete in a bacon eating contest.

Social service agencies are always struggling to find the best way to reach those who need help and the same holds true for agencies that care for animals.

Animal Friends is hoping to reach thousands of dogs and cats in some of Pittsburgh’s poorest neighborhoods using a door-to-door approach funded through a $50,000 grant from the PetSmart Foundation.

Starting in 2014, Animal Friends will send crews into a few North Side neighborhoods to offer free spay and neutering, vaccinations and flea treatments.
