More Awards for 90.5 WESA

May 31, 2015:  90.5 WESA's Josh Raulerson and The Allegheny Front's Reid Frazier, along with Erika Beras, Deanna Garcia, Kevin Gavin, Larkin Page-Jacobs and Sarah Schneider won awards for their reporting at the 2015 Pennsylvania Associated Press Broadcasters Awards, held May 30 in Gettysburg. 

A first-place award in the News Documentary category went to Raulerson and Frazier for their series, "Zone of Influence". Kevin Gavin and Sarah Schneider received second place in this category for their work on the "School to Prison Pipeline" broadcast.

Larkin Page-Jacobs won a second place award for her feature on a business incubator for felons. Erika Beras won a third-place award in the Public Affairs category for her report on veterans and traumatic brain injuries, while Deanna Garcia won a third place award in enterprise/individual reporting for her work on poverty in the LGBT community.

90.5 WESA reporters Deanna Garcia, Liz Reid, Larkin Page-Jacobs, and Erika BerasEssential Pittsburgh's Paul Guggenheimer, Marcus Charleston and Heather McClain, and The Allegheny Front's Kara Holsopple won awards at the Press Club of Western PA’s Annual “Golden Quill” Awards last night.

For a seventh year, the New Pittsburgh Courier has honored “top caliber women in the Pittsburgh area” through its 50 Women of Excellence Awards. This year’s recipients include legacy winners Alma Speed Fox and Katie Everette Johnson as well as 90.5 WESA General Manager DeAnne Hamilton.

“The contributions of these women are what aids in making Pittsburgh ‘the most livable city,’ “ says Rod Doss, editor and publisher of the New Pittsburgh Courier. 

Essential Pittsburgh won first place in the broadcast/radio/public affairs category at the Pittsburgh Black Media Federation’s Robert L. Vann Awards of Excellence for its program, “The Black Middle Class Experience in Pittsburgh.”

The judges commented: “What really made this piece work was hearing all of the different voices of how economics and social issues were at play in the lives of the black middle class in Pittsburgh.”

Presented by the Pennsylvania AP Broadcasters Association, the 2013 PAPBA News Awards are in recognition of outstanding broadcast journalism efforts by AP member radio and television stations, cable television and networks in Pennsylvania. Awards were presented on May 31 at the PAPBA banquet in State College. 

90.5 WESA claimed nine wins, including three top prizes, as well as the Sandy Starobin Award for Individual Reporting.

90.5 WESA Staff Wins Several Golden Quill Awards

Presented by the Press Club of Western Pennsylvania, the 50th annual Golden Quill Awards were awarded in recognition of professional excellence in written, photographic, broadcast and online journalism. 90.5 WESA claimed 11 wins, including three top prizes and multiple finalist awards, for some of the station's most compelling broadcast features.

The Radio Television Digital News Association

This week, 90.5 WESA was recognized with two regional Edward R. Murrow awards in the large market radio category. The Radio Television Digital News Association, or RTDNA, presents the awards in honor of outstanding achievements in electronic journalism.

Presented by the Press Club of Western Pennsylvania, the 49th annual Golden Quill Awards were awarded in recognition of professional excellence in written, photographic, broadcast, and online journalism. 90.5 WESA received three top prizes, as well as multiple finalist awards, for some of the station's most compelling broadcast features.

Presented by the Pennsylvania Associated Press Broadcasters Association, the Pennsylvania Associated Press News Awards recognize outstanding broadcast journalism efforts by AP member radio and television stations, cable television and networks in Pennsylvania.

Several 90.5 staff members received recognition in the Radio A, Major Market Stations category.
