At the south end of the Pittsburgh Zoo and PPG Aquarium parking lot is a small access road with a sign reading “Do Not Enter.” Beyond that is a big gravel parking lot, mostly used for overflow parking during large zoo events and as a staging area and storage space for the Department of Public Works.

For a city molded by its dramatic topography, Pittsburgh has admittedly been a bit neglectful of many of those simple structures that get people up and down the hills: steps.

But over the next year-and-a-half, city leaders are hoping to hear some innovative ideas from national experts on how they can repair and improve the city’s extensive system of staircases.

Though a design firm hasn't been chosen yet, $1.16 million worth of in-kind services furnished by the Citi Foundation means Pittsburgh won't have to pay anything.

Pittsburgh's fall foliage is expected to produce the peak, prismatic experience this weekend.

To celebrate, Tree Pittsburgh will host "Ginkgo Fest" from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday at the Maple Grove Shelter in Highland Park honoring the city’s colorful Ginkgo Biloba trees.

“Ginkgos have this very distinctive fan-shaped leaf, and in the fall they have a brilliant gold color, so they’re a very beautiful fall tree,” said Kylie Stackis, program assistant with Tree Pittsburgh.

In August 2011, heavy rains triggered a flash flood on Washington Boulevard in the Highland Park neighborhood, killing four. Kimberly Griffith, 46, and her two daughters, Breanna, 12, and Mikaela, 8, died as the water rose above their car roof. Mary Saflin, 72, was swept away by rising water. City Council is expected Tuesday to approve a settlement for the victims' estates.

The payments total $375,000 for the two families. Pittsburgh Water and Sewer Authority reached a settlement with the families in July 2014.

Cities are made up of a collection of neighborhoods with unique features and characteristics. On the first Tuesday of the month, business contributor Rebecca Harris will focus on one of the city’s neighborhoods. Today's focus is Highland Park.

Heth’s Run Valley hasn’t been much of a valley for a while. The area underneath Heth’s Run bridge—a portion of Butler Street between Morningside and Highland Park—had long been a dumping site for industrial waste. City Councilwoman Deb Gross, whose district includes the area, said many of her constituents didn’t even know a bridge was there.

But that area is slated to get a major facelift, which Gross said has been a long time coming.

Fifteen years ago, the Allegheny Cycling Association was hosting their summer cycling races in the parking lot of the Pittsburgh Zoo.

Today, racers have found a more fitting home at the Bud Harris Cycling Track in Highland Park. Formerly a driver training course, according to the Pittsburgh Parks Conservancy, the track is a half-mile concrete oval featuring banked walls and a slight hill.
