VisitPITTSBURGH predicts the Steel City's upcoming event and conference schedule should pump millions of dollars into the local economy in the coming year. 

The tourism nonprofit announced their fall lineup Thursday at the Marriott City Center.

The lineup has a variety of events, including the Pittsburgh Irish Festival Sept. 8-10, Doors Open Pittsburgh Oct. 7-8 and the PNC Broadway series, which opens October 17. There are also holiday-themed events planned like ScareHouse and A Very Pittsburgh Christmas.

The hotel industry is enjoying a boom time in Philadelphia.

New accommodations are under construction in what will be the city's tallest office tower, the Comcast Innovation & Technology Center; in what will be the state's highest residential building, the SLS building; and at other sites on the Penn and Drexel campuses, in Center City, and in Fishtown.

Some of the new hotels will adapt historic spaces, including the Family Court, Liberty Title and Trust, and the Willis Hale Building at Juniper and Chestnut Streets.

Reporting Wage Violations at Pennsylvania Hotels

Pennsylvania ranks fourth in the country -- behind Texas, Alabama and Florida -- for the number of hotels with labor law violations, according to the Department of Labor and a recent PublicSource story. This includes wage and child labor violations.

PublicSource Reporter Leah Samuel says because many hotel workers are low skilled and in the hospitality industry, where tips may be given, they’re especially vulnerable to wage violations.

“In Pennsylvania, you can actually pay someone as low as $2.83 an hour if they receive tips,”  Samuel explains. So even if a hotel worker normally gets paid at or above the minimum wage, when it comes to overtime, the rate might be 1.5 times that $2.83, which is illegal.

“It’s supposed to be 1.5 times the regular wage they would receive, minus something called the ‘tip credit’.”
