A $300,000 investment in 2017 in a 145-year-old Erie asset appears to be paying off.

Attendance is up markedly at Presque Isle Lighthouse, said Michael Sullivan, executive director of the lighthouse located near Beach 9.

Summer is unofficially here and that means more traffic on the local waterways.

City officials are acknowledging that representatives from Amazon visited the Steel City last month. Calling it a "real estate" visit, Mayor Bill Peduto said their one-day stopover included lots of questions about the amenities, housing and transit required for an estimated 50,000 employees.

Shakespeare is a staple in high school and collegiate classrooms, but the Bard isn’t always taught in elementary school.

Pittsburgh’s Classic Theater wants to change that, introducing kids to Shakespeare through week-long summer camps for children as young as 7.

Looking for an evening out without leaving the confines of your car? It’s drive-in season, which means affordable fun under the stars.

Drive-in movie popularity peaked in the 1950s with more than 4,000 theaters nationwide, but slowly declined in the following decades. Baby boomers grew up, television offered in-home entertainment alternatives and indoor theaters offered advanced screening technologies.

Ridership along the Penn Avenue bike lanes is up at least 25 percent since June, according to data released last week by the Pittsburgh Downtown Partnership.

Spokesperson Leigh White said they counted roughly 1,000 trips per day on average in July. Ridership also spiked on weekends, she said.

As a central H.J. Heinz Company product, pickles have played a key role in Pittsburgh’s past. And if you ask Jeremy Waldrup, president of the Pittsburgh Downtown Partnership, they’ll play a key role in the city’s future as well.

The PDP on Wednesday announced plans for the first ever Picklesburgh food festival, slated for July 17-18 on the Rachel Carson Bridge and supported by prime sponsor H.J. Heinz.

As the Pittsburgh region experiences its yearly rush of returning college students, a number of high school graduates who initially registered will not be moving into the freshmen dorms.

According to University of Pittsburgh Education Professor Lindsay Page, 10 to 20 percent of the high school graduates who register for college in the spring fail to show up for enrollment in the fall. This is due in large part to unforeseen financial constraints, lack of resources and lack of guidance.

In researching this growing problem, Page looked at enrollment data, and she interviewed career counselors, advisors and students for her forthcoming book Summer Melt: Supporting Low-income Students through the Transition to College

As the heat of July blazes on, we’ve been talking with some of the hosts at our sister station 91.3 WYEP, about music of the summer. Throughout July and August the hosts talk about what makes for a great summer song, and new music for the summer.

For WYEP afternoon mix host, Rosemary Welsch, a summer jam is about sense of place and time, and “The Brazil Connection” met these requirements.

“It's this wonderful project that was put together by the Berman brothers, they’re a production team. Where they took the original masters of incredible soul ballads like Bill Withers and Aretha Franklin and Marvin Gaye and Billie Holiday and they brought in Brazilian musicians to put either Bossa Nova or Samba rhythms under those great vocals. And it’s a wonderful record that marries two perfect worlds together.”
