The women of Continuum Dance Theater opens a new show with a one night event this Saturday. Objects of DESIRE, the latest work by director and choreographer Sarah Parker, plans to “take the audience on a journey through the spectacle that has become ‘chasing the American Dream.’” Constructed from a year’s worth of research, Parker’s piece follows the story of five characters through a fusion of dance and theater performance art.

Dance lovers rejoice: the 13th Annual PittStop Lindy Hop runs through this weekend. Dancers of all ages and experience levels swing dance to live bands and deejayed music. Hundreds of dancers from across the country come out to celebrate dances of days gone by. The event features seven dances — including two late-nights — as well as spacious venues and great bands Gordon Webster, The Boilermaker Jazz Band, Dr. Zoot and the Solomon Douglas Sextet featuring Alison Dreyfuss.

The Heinz History Center teams up with Pittsburgh Tintype Studio this Saturday for Frozen in Time: Tintype Photography in the Civil War. Expert Jason Snyder, owner of Pittsburgh Tintype Studio, will be on hand to discuss the 19th century process and technique that was popular with soldiers during the Civil War. The exhibition also includes an 1860 tintype camera on loan from the Smithsonian.

The largest film festival in the region returns beginning this weekend. The 32nd Three Rivers Film Festival is a celebration of all the things that film can be. This year’s docket features approximately 80 films from a wide variety of genres, from independent American cinema to documentaries, restored classics, international films, and competitive short films. The event features visiting filmmakers, informal discussions, live music events and more.

Shimmiers and shakers unite: the first ever Pittsburgh Bellydance Festival runs this weekend. The premiere festival features several days of dynamic workshops, lectures, vendors, and performances. Workshops will be held throughout the weekend, and non-preformers can come out and cheer on competitors in the intense Belly-Off in the Burgh competition.

This weekend, the Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre takes on the works of Tony and Emmy award-winning choreography powerhouse Twyla Tharp with a pairing of two of her creations. “An Evening with Twyla Tharp” features “Nine Sinatra Songs” and “In the Upper Room.” With “Nine Sinatra Songs,” Tharp blends ballet and ballroom movement, all set to songs by Ol’ Blue Eyes himself.

The 28th Annual Pittsburgh International Lesbian and Gay Film Festival opens this weekend. Known as “Reel Q,” the coming two weeks feature 15 narrative and documentary films, alongside three programs of shorts. The festival opens on Friday but continues throughout the weekend. Saturday and Sunday see a wonderfully eclectic set of programming come to the Harris Theater.

The onset of October means it is time for Halloween preparations to begin. This month, the Manor Theater helps movie-lovers gear up for the season with the film series Manor at Midnight. Come out every Saturday in October to view classic ghoulish cinema on the big screen. The series begins with Steven Spielberg’s classic ocean thriller Jaws. Look for the series to continue throughout the month of October, as the Manor answers the important questions: Where is Johnny?

The folks at Midnight Radio have dreamed up an outrageous combination for their season opener. This weekend they mix the ‘Burgh with the Bard with "Shakesburgh." The live comedy show is sure to provide yinzer-brand hilarity to William Shakespeare. In their own words, “A yinzer will be tamed, hauses will be divided, and a coward will die his last death.” Midnight Radio’s take on the legendary writer begins this weekend. “Shakesburgh” goes live this Saturday at 9 p.m.

Pittsburgh's brand new pop-up food flea market kicks off this Saturday. Dubbed Smorgasburgh, the open-air market features delicacies from 30 of the region’s finest chefs, farmers, and related purveyors. Food vendors will come from a variety of cuisines, featuring appearances by Fukuda, The Crested Duck, Franktuary, and Bluebird Kitchen. Live music will be performed by singer/songwriter Madeline Rae. Smorgasburgh opens for business this Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

This Saturday, the Arcade Comedy Theater and Knights of the Arcade attempts to turn the notoriously reclusive Dungeons & Dragons role playing game into a spectator sport with “Knights of the Arcade: An Epic D&D Comedy Adventure.” Dungeon Master Fred Betzner and featured players Dave Ranallo, Liz Labacz, Mike Rubino, Brad Stephenson and Joseph Lyons improvise the live show, with the overall goal of keeping the fan-favorite game fun and focused as they build their story.

This Saturday, City of Asylum hosts a cultural exhibition in two parts. First, City of Asylum’s Writers in the Garden event begins in the afternoon. The event shines a spotlight on local Pittsburgh writers, featuring the authors reading in six different private gardens around the Northside. Each writer treats their audience to a special, space-limited reading.

Pittsburgh Shakespeare in the Park is running a unique take on one of Shakespeare’s famous works. PSIP’s Romeo and Juliet asks the audience to choose a side in the story’s fatal feud. Accompany either Romeo and the Montagues or Juliet and the Capulets as the story progresses. Theatregoers will view the performance on blankets or chairs, and move to follow their part of the story as it moves throughout the park, making for a truly natural experience.

This Sunday, come out and honor the work of over 1,500 makers at the Knit the Bridge Art Party. Under the direction of artist Amanda Gross, families, friends, and volunteers came together from across Allegheny County to organize the yarn bombing of the Andy Warhol Bridge. Pittsburghers can come to experience the art project firsthand at the event.

Fancy yourself to be a wizard with words? The Pittsburgh Crossword Puzzle Tournament this Saturday might be the place to prove yourself. Competitors will be provided three puzzles of increasing difficulty to be solved in a timed fashion, and points will be awarded for accuracy and speed of solving. If you feel like you might need a hand, you can sign up for the Pairs Tournament with a friend or loved one. All proceeds will benefit the Western PA Chapter of the Leukemia and Lymphona Society.

Lawrenceville is set to take a heavy dose of rock and roll with the second annual Rock All Night Tour. Dubbed R.A.N.T., this expansive music festival is taking over 20 indoor and outdoor venues while presenting a wide assortment of musical stylings. Featuring everything from classic American bluegrass to modern heavy metal, 50 bands and 20 solo artists will play throughout the day on Saturday and pushing into the early hours on Sunday. The event begins with the Morning Breakfast Tour from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Enjoy a little Sunday diversion while supporting local artisans and businesses at the Rivers of Steel Heritage Market. The market is open to the public and offers a chance to explore the historic Pump House. Live music and entertainment will be offered alongside food trucks and locally made crafts. Vendors include Oh My Grill, Missy Steele Pottery and Satorious Designs. The Rivers of Steel Heritage Market opens this Sunday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

This Sunday, the aptly-named weekly concert series Weather Permitting presents a day of music and fun. Featuring a wide range of styles and genres, this family friendly event will include food trucks, poetry, hula hooping, squirt guns, and, of course, live music. Featured performers include Moldies and Monsters, Vertigo Go, and Arlo Aldo. Round 8 of Weather Permitting will run from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday night at Shadyside Nursery.

One of the area’s largest and most unique car shows returns for another weekend of fun this Saturday and Sunday. The International Car Show at Schenley Park puts more than 2,000 vehicles on display, showcasing all makes, years and countries. Alongside the various show, vintage races will run throughout the streets of Schenley Park. Dozens of sponsor tents will also be present at the event, providing plenty of food and refreshments.

The art festival season continues with this weekend’s Southside Works Exposed. Running all weekend long from Friday to Sunday, the event features live music from two stages, sidewalk sales and special deals from retail venues. Featured Saturday performers include Lava Game, Mercedez and Green Eggs. Sunday will feature a family fun day, with Wild World of Animals, Zumbatonic and Kelsey Friday and the Rest of the Week Band.

A wide range of styles will play throughout the day, including jazz, blues, rock, bluegrass, acoustic, German, and electronic. Musical performances will occur at both indoor and outdoor venues. The daytime portion of the festival will be family-friendly, beginning at 2 p.m., while the evening programming starting at around 8 p.m.

This Saturday the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra presents a truly cinematic performance. Pixar in Concert features music from the beloved movie studio, from "Toy Story" to "Up" and including their latest release, "Brave." The movie scores will be performed live, accompanied by movie clips projected on an overhead screen. Pixar in Concert will run Saturday at 2:30 p.m. at Heinz Hall downtown.

The Mattress Factory presents "Art Lab: Sculpting with Light." Stop by for a hands-on show dedicated to showing how artist James Turrell  “sculpts with light.” Participants will create their own slides to project and explore the process of making art with a fabulously elusive material. The Art Lab runs this Saturday from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. in the Mattress Factory lobby on Pittsburgh’s North Side.

Perhaps you’ve heard of a gallery crawl, or even a bar crawl. Well, the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust is sponsoring a “sketch crawl” all throughout downtown Pittsburgh on Saturday. Just bring all the art supplies you need and show up at the Cultural Trust’s Education Center on 805 Liberty Avenue at 10:00 a.m. Accomplished sketch artist Rick Antolic will take participants to various locations throughout the Cultural District, helping with the sketches along the way.

The Pittsburgh Opera is continuing its production of “La cenerentola,” or “Cinderella,” this weekend. With music by Gioachino Rossini, this opera tells the classic fairy tale story in which Cinderella must overcome an abusive step-family with the help of a fairy godmother to fall in love with a handsome prince. However, this production of Cinderella has a special ending that celebrates the power of true goodness. Tonight’s performance begins at 8:00 at the Benedum Center in downtown Pittsburgh.

Saturday, March 30:

First, the downtown gallery “Space” is hosting a reading entitled “Mean Girls” tonight at 7:00. The readings are meant to raise awareness and increase discussion of the problem of bullying among teenage girls, and the literature works in tandem with an ongoing art exhibit of the same name.  Tonight’s readings begin at 7:00 at the “Space” gallery on Liberty Avenue downtown.
