If asked to identify a giant in American architecture, the name Frank Lloyd Wright may be the first person who comes to mind. This region has the good fortune to be within driving distance to one of his most famous buildings, the iconic Falling Water.
This week, travel contributor Elaine Labalme offered suggestions for Wright designed buildings, not far from Pittsburgh. Wright has more than 500 completed structures across the United States, and these are just a few of his designs.
Fallingwater: One of Wright's most famous designs, Fallingwater was built for the Kauffman family. Built over a waterfall, the house is a National Historic Landmark and is now open for spring tours.
Taliesin: Located in Spring Green, Wisconsin, was the home of Frank Lloyd Wright as well as his studio. From when it was built in 1911 to Wright's death in 1959, the house and landscape were constantly being changed for his family.
Graycliff:The Graycliff estate is just outside of Buffalo, New York and sits on a bluff overlooking Lake Erie. Graycliff consists of three buildings and extensive gardens, all designed by Wright. Tours range from basic to in-depth, so visitors can choose the extent of their tour.
Kentuck Knob: A one-story home in Chalk Hill, Pa., it's four miles away from Fallingwater. The home is still owned by Lord Palumbo, who balances occupancy and tours.
The Guggenheim: The New York City museum was designed by Wright. The building is wider on the top than it is on the bottom, and it houses Impressionist, Post-Impressionism, modern and contemporary art.
