For $49, you can get a one-way ticket directly to Orlando, thanks to Allegiant Air’s new flight route out of Pittsburgh International Airport.
Allegheny County Airport Authority CEO Christina Cassotis announced Tuesday a new non-stop route to Orlando Sanford International Airport beginning Nov. 5. The route will run twice weekly, increasing Allegiant Air’s flights out of PIT from 10 flights a week to 12.
“This fills a very strong need on a very strong leisure route and complements the existing service to the larger Orlando International Airport on Southwest and Delta,” Cassotis said.
Allegiant will also establish a permanent base of operations at PIT, which includes a single 156-seat Airbus A319 aircraft, beginning Christmas Eve. The move is expected to generate 40 new jobs, including pilots, flight attendants and aircraft maintenance workers, according to airline spokesman Justin Ralenkotter.
The airline announced three new Florida destinations and a seasonal flight to Myrtle Beach, S.C. in February. The nonstop Orlando flight marks its fifth destination serviced out of PIT and the airports 51st direct flight overall.
Ralenkotter said Allegiant will also begin offering charter flights to Punta Cana and Cancun out of PIT this fall and hopes to expand its Pittsburgh service even further in the future.
“Having an aircraft base here definitely sets Pittsburgh up for additional growth going forward (and) makes it a lot easier for us to add more routes,” he said.
Nonstop flights to Dallas Love Field through Southwest Airlines and a Vacation Express flight to Freeport, Grand Bahama Island both celebrated inaugural flights this week, Cassotis said.
