Take a Road Trip and Tour of Presidential Homes

Ohio and Virginia are both nicknamed the home of presidents. From Mount Vernon to Monticello presidential homes are great places to visit and learn about history.

With President’s Day a little over a week away, travel contributor Elaine Labalme gives some suggestions of presidential residences you might like to visit.

  • Wheatland - Check out the home of former president James Buchanan, located in Lancaster, PA. The mansion sits on 22 acres of land and features gardens and frog ponds.
  • Hildene - The Lincoln family home in Manchester, VT hosts tours of both the house and grounds that President Lincoln's children, Robert and Mary, lived in. The mansion housed Lincoln descendants until 1975, longer than any other Lincoln residence.
  • Mount Vernon - George Washington's estate in Alexandria, VA will be celebrating Washington's 282nd birthday with free admission on Feb. 17.
  • Springwood - Visit the home of Franklin D. Roosevelt and Presidential Library and Museum in Hyde Park, N.Y. to see the first US Presidential Library. If it's open, you can also visit Top Cottage, FDR's retreat from the hustle and bustle of Springwood.
