A few protesters challenged the speaker’s views. Students plan to protest another student-sponsored event next month advertised as a debate about gender identity.

University of Pittsburgh students plan to protest an event tonight that they call transphobic. Conservative student group Turning Point USA is hosting a former collegiate swimmer who has spoken out against trans women competing in women’s sports. Pitt has said it supports the students’ free speech rights though it acknowledged that the events are QUOTE toxic and hurtful for many.

Shapiro included a tax incentive program in his first budget released almost two weeks ago. If approved, new teachers, nurses and police officers would receive up to $2,500 a year for up to three years for working in what Shapiro called “frontline” trades.

On Friday, Superintendent Wayne Walters sent families a letter saying that in the next school year, teachers would use the one-hour delay for professional development. But after hearing concerns about the plan, Walters sent another letter Wednesday, saying that the idea will be discussed as part of a strategic planning process, but not be carried out next year.

Pittsburgh Public Schools hosted its 29th annual African American History Bowl Challenge this year to give students an opportunity to engage with the accomplishments of Black individuals to American history. Superintendent Wayne Walters first pitched the competition when he was a teacher.
