The Confluence – where the news comes together is 90.5 WESA’s weekly news program.
Each week reporters, editors and bloggers join veteran journalist, and host, Kevin Gavin. They’ll go behind the headlines taking an in-depth look at the stories important to the Pittsburgh region.
This week we’ll address the status of the recount request by Green Party presidential candidate Jill Stein. StateImpact PA reporters join us for a look at gas drilling in the commonwealth. We’ll open a reporter’s notebook to get the story behind the story of the Pittsburgh Legionnaires’ outbreak. We’ll also mark the 75th anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor.
Green Party Recount in Pennsylvania
The fate of Green Party candidate Jill Stein's request for a recount in Pennsylvania must wait until a federal court hearing on Friday. Next Tuesday is the federal deadline for states to certify their election results. What are the chances the court will rule in Stein’s favor and what’s at stake? We’ll pose those questions to Tom Fontaine, political reporter for the Trib and Dave Davies, WHYY’s senior reporter.
The gas drilling impact law must be amended according to Auditor General Gene DePasquale. Those amendments include clarifying spending guidelines as well as improved oversight. We’ll discuss what this means for PA with Allegheny Front reporter Reid Frazier and StateImpact reporter Marie Cusick.
Reporter Sean Hamill gives us the story behind an upcoming article he’s been working on for the Post-Gazette. We’ll discover how the CDC investigated the Legionnaires' outbreak in Pittsburgh in 2012 and 2013.
Remembering Pearl Harbor
This year marked the 75th anniversary of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. We'll go back into the WDUQ archives to hear from Pennsylvania survivors of Pearl Harbor who took part in a 50th anniversary special.
