Carnegie Library Board to Hold Open Meeting

The public is invited to meet with the Board of the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh this Thursday evening.

It's the first in a series of annual meetings meant to connect the Board of Directors with the community.

Carnegie Library spokeswoman Suzanne Thinnes said the meeting will begin with a short "State of the Library" presentation. Thinnes said board members will speak about this year's library programs, and update the public on the library's finances.

"A couple of years ago, people were surprised about the financial situation the library was in, so we want to show that our funding has been diversified," said Thinnes. "Last year was a great success with the 'Our Library, Our Future' voter initiative, so that will be discussed. We're also planning a five-year strategic plan that involves community input."

Thinnes said a question-and-answer session will follow the presentation.

"This really gives [the public] the opportunity to have that face-to-face contact," said Thinnes. "If there's a question or a comment that a person might not feel comfortable saying in front of a large crowd or a large audience, there will be time afterwards for personal introductions and conversations with the library board members, as well as the staff that will be there."

The meeting will run from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday at the main lecture hall of the Carnegie Library's Oakland branch.

Thinnes said library users should pre-register in order to speak or ask questions. Speakers should visit the library's website to sign up. Registration ends at 5:00 p.m. Wednesday.
