Following Franklin Regional Stabbing Incident, Nearby Schools Put On Alert

After 20 people were injured in a stabbing incident at Franklin Regional High School in Murrysville Wednesday morning, neighboring school districts are on high alert.

Cara Zanella, director of communications for Gateway School District in Monroeville, said the district immediately offered school buses and other assistance to their neighbors and informed parents of the situation at Franklin Regional.

“Although Monroeville Police did report to Franklin Regional to assist them, they left the (School Resource Officers) here in the schools with us, which we greatly appreciated,” Zanella said. “Our schools were put on alert. We didn’t do any lockdowns or anything like that. We understood that the student that was responsible for this act over at Franklin Regional was caught.”

Zanella said Gateway staff who had children attending Murrysville schools were released from duty, and that school counselors are prepared to deal with any Gateway students who might be negatively affected by the incident.

“We try to stay on top of this kind of stuff,” Zanella said. “We realize this can happen to any school district and we certainly try to stay alert daily so that we can try to prevent something like this from happening, if that’s possible.”
