Meet The Mathematical Muscle Behind The Pittsburgh Marathon

Finish line logistics captain Brian Schmidt is in the thick of it now.

All last month he categorized and readied a behemoth assortment of race-day paraphernalia across two floors of a Strip District U-Haul facility. Today, he’s a walking ledger for pallets of road cones, fruit cups, Vaseline and mylar spread over 14 neighborhoods in dozens of tarp-covered, plywood boxes.

“If you think about it, for a Steelers game, there's 60,000 people in Heinz Field," he said. "But you're in Heinz Field; there's your location. In a way, our stadium is 26.2 miles long.”

Festivities surrounding the Dicks Sporting Goods Pittsburgh Marathon take over much of Downtown, the North Side, West End, South Side, East End and Strip District this weekend, including a two-day running expo and seven individual events.
