On November 7, voters in some northern Allegheny County municipalities will choose between one-term Republican Incumbent Ed Kress and Democrat Anita Prizio to represent District 3 on County Council.
Kress is a native of Shaler Township. The lawyer was first elected in 2013, although he served two other short appointed stints.
He characterizes his first term as “productive.” Kress introduced legislation focusing on fraud reporting, closing property tax loopholes and other issues. He said he’d like to continue recruiting young people into trade industry careers and try to take on the opioid epidemic.
“What I’d like to see our county do is sue the pharmaceutical industry,” Kress said. “Other states have done it. Other counties have done it. They [pharmaceutical companies] are responsible for this, and we need money to treat this problem.”
Kress will face Democratic challenger Anita Prizio of O’Hara Township. She’s the owner of Pittsburgh Crankshaft Service, a small engine parts company her parents started in the 1950s.
She served on her borough council for several years, and while Prizio said she also prioritizes fighting the opioid epidemic, much of her platform focuses on environmental issues such as clean water and fracking, as well as transparency in government.
“I’ve attended the council meetings, and the legislation’s either passed or referred to committee,” she said. “Debate should occur in front of public scrutiny.”
Allegheny County District 3 is just north of Pittsburgh, and includes Aspinwall, Etna, Fox Chapel, Hampton, Indiana, Millvale, O'Hara, Reserve, Shaler, Sharpsburg and West Deer. According to 2010 Census estimates, the district's population is 96,714.
