Pennsylvania First Lady Susan Corbett read the book Amazing Grace to kindergartners at Pittsburgh Faison K-5 School in Homewood this morning and discussed it with older students. The book is about a little girl who wants to play Peter Pan in the school play but is told she can't because she is black and a girl. Grace achieves her goal by the end of the book, teaching the lesson that with perseverance and hard work, dreams can come true.
Through its program with governors' spouses, Scholastic Books donated 500 books to Faison to encourage kids to read every day in the summer.
"Last year I donated the books [from Scholastic] to homeless shelters," Susan Corbett said. "This year I wanted to donate the books to an elementary school. Of course, our home is here in Pittsburgh and I think Faison and the Pittsburgh Public Schools (PPS) are doing a terrific job."
PPS Superintendent Linda Lane said it's very important for students to reinforce their skills over the summer.
"That's why we encourage our students to participate in summer school when it's available for them, but summer reading makes a big difference, so we're grateful to the Carnegie Library system all over the city here in Pittsburgh that can provide a place for kids to go and get books," Lane said.
