Spring Break With The New Girl
A little madness in the spring is wholesome …even for the King, wrote Emily Dickinson. What better way to quell the madness caused by Spring fever than with a getaway? Travel contributor Elaine Labalme joined us this week with suggestions for Spring Break excursions.
Charlottesville, VA is a great spring break town. Labalme says this is the best time of year to tour Thomas Jefferson's Monticello. Charlottesville also has an indie music scene with a handful of small clubs to check out and wine country to visit. The Monticello Wine Trail makes stops at over 30 wineries. Shenandoah National Park is also worth a trip to see the waterfalls.
Everglades National Park is located in the center of South Florida. During the spring it isn't crowded and humid, so now's the perfect time to go. Visitors can take airboat rides, go fishing, and see wildlife such as manatees and alligators in the Mangrove forests.
Cape Hatteras National Seashore at the Outer Banks is home to over 70 miles of seashore. Three light houses are still open, one is the tallest light house in North America. The Cape Hatteras light house opens for visitors April 18th.
The Cayman Islands are an hour away from Miami and are great for a spring break getaway. Consisting of three islands, the Caymans are great for snorkeling, shopping or taking a walk on Grand Cayman's seven mile beach.
Entrance to all of America's National Parks will be free April 19-20 to kick off the opening weekend of National Parks Week, so make sure to get out to a park if you can.
