State Gives Boost to Local Museums

Three southwestern Pennsylvania museums received a total of $17,800 in grants from the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission March 19 to support operating costs.

Grants for the Washington County Historical Society, the Pennsylvania Trolley Museum in Chartiers Township, and the Greene County Historical Society in Waynesburg came from the museum commission’s Cultural and Historical Support Grant Program, which currently serves 121 facilities across the state.

The Jimmy Stewart Museum in Indiana, Pa. is holding its annual fundraising event Friday. Among the special guests is Carol Burnett, who is receiving the 2014 Harvey Award.

Burnett idolized Stewart growing up and they later became friends. We speak with the museum's Executive Director Tim Harley about the event and the museum's history.

Two Pennsylvania senators, one Democrat and one Republican, are trying to dig up some new funding for local museums across the commonwealth.

Over the last eight years, state aid to the museums has dropped from $29 million to $2 million for fiscal year 2013-14.

Senators Jay Costa (D-Allegheny) and Pat Browne (R-Lehigh) have authored legislation to dedicate 3 percent of the state’s Realty Transfer Tax, about $8 million to $9 million.   

In case you had doubts that buildings full of borrow-able books and artwork are a good thing, the Institute of Museum and Library Sciences and The Campaign for Grade-Level Reporting has released a report that says they are. 

Growing Young Minds: How Museums and Libraries Create Lifelong Learners was released on Thursday and discusses ways libraries and museums are supporting children.

Study author Mimi Howard said the goal of this paper was to focus on the development of early literacy skills by using these public resources.
