Children's Museum to Celebrate Building Anniversary

Children museum's "Lantern Building" turns 10 on September 6th.

 Ten years ago the Children Museum’s “Lantern Building” began to illuminate the North Shore, and to celebrate the anniversary the museum will offer free admission Saturday.

As part of the festivities families can help the museum build a giant lantern. There will also be a family resource fair with booths from the Pittsburgh Pirates, the Center for Women and CEASEfire PA.

PA Museums and Historical Societies Receive Grants

Preserving history can be an expensive task, but the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission (PHMC) is trying to make it a bit easier by handing out grants.

This year, the commission awarded $1.9 million to 130 museums and official county historical societies throughout the commonwealth.

“These grants are used for general operating support,” said Howard Pollman, PHMC spokesman. “So that really helps some museums and historical societies operate in some way because those kind of dollars are often very difficult to come by.”

For Pittsburgh and Ecuadorian Students, Food Serves as a Cultural Bridge

When Erick Rivas arrived in Pittsburgh last week, he had one thing on his mind: “la comida.”

“I really enjoyed trying different types of food,” he said through a translator. “Being friends with the teens here was a great experience.”

The 15-year-old is one of six students visiting the U.S. from Quito, Ecuador as part of the Children’s Museum of Pittsburgh’s Scaling the Walls/Escalanda Paredas cultural exchange program.

Mr.McFeely Kicks Off 14th Annual Sweater Drive

Pittsburgh’s most iconic — and speediest — deliveryman, Mr. McFeely, helped kick off the 14th annual Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood Sweater Drive Thursday.

McFeely, played by David Newell, brought his puppet friends, Don Quixote, King Friday and Daniel Striped Tiger, to teach the 72 students from Crescent Early Childhood Centers and the Children’s Museum Pre-K Headstart Programs the value of sharing by donating sweaters.
