The Press Club of Western Pennsylvania announced the winners of the 54th Golden Quills Awards on May 24th, 2018 at the Rivers Casino in Pittsburgh. The competition recognizes professional excellence in print, broadcast, and digital journalism, including photography and videography in Western Pennsylvania, West Virginia and Ohio. Below is a list of winners and finalists from Pittsburgh Community Broadcasting, including 90.5 WESA, The Allegheny Front, and 91.3 WYEP.

The Pittsburgh Black Media Federation’s 30th annual Robert L. Vann Media Awards, held May 3 at the University of Pittsburgh, highlighted the power of diverse storytelling and exceptional journalism. Three 90.5 WESA reporters were among the winners.

90.5 WESA reporter Margaret J. Krauss's report, Snagging Amazon HQ2 was recently recognized with an Edward R. Murrow Regional Award in the hard news category by the Radio Television Digital News Association (RTDNA). 

Finalists have been named in the Press Club of Western PA’s 54th Golden Quill Awards, recognizing professional excellence in journalism. More than 15 journalists and producers from WESA, WYEP, and Allegheny Front are finalists in the Radio/Podcast category for spot/breaking news, features,  science, education, arts and entertainment, sports, environment, documentary, public service and more. May 26, 2017; PITTSBURGH, PA— Pittsburgh Community Broadcasting (including 90.5 WESA and 91.3 WYEP, as well as The Allegheny Front) has had an award-winning season, with recognition from the Pennsylvania Associated Press, Pittsburgh Black Media Federation Robert L. Vann Awards and culminating last evening with awards at the Pennsylvania Press Club Golden Quills Awards.

I promised to keep you informed on the status of Federal funding for Pittsburgh Community Broadcasting, and there is some good news to share.

 On May 5, the President signed the $1-trillion-dollar compromise appropriations bill that averted a government shutdown through September... and secures our Federal funding--and that of the entire CPB-funded public media system--at current levels until September 30, 2019.

Nov. 1, 2016: Pittsburgh, PA—The Allegheny Front presents Headwaters, a new multi-part series on the future of our region's water resources. The series, which launched on October 22 on The Allegheny Front will be broadcast each week through mid-December, and segments will be included in 90.5 WESA newscasts each week as well.

90.5 WESA will host a Community Listening Session on Thursday, October 6, 2016 at 5:30 at the Father Ryan Arts Center, 420 Chartiers Ave, McKees Rocks, PA 15136.

WESA will facilitate a conversation aimed at understanding what the residents of the Sto-Rox community are concerned about, what they celebrate as a community, and what others should know about life in their community.

All members of the community are welcome; those under 18 must be accompanied by an adult. Light refreshments will be available.

Local Residents Invited to Participate Oct. 13 - Nov. 11

Sept. 15, 2016 – 90.5 WESA today announced that it is bringing StoryCorps, the organization that celebrates the stories of everyday Americans, to Pittsburgh from October 13 to November 11, 2016 and that local listeners with a story to share are invited to take part in this groundbreaking Oral History Project. In the course of its nationwide tour, StoryCorps has collected more than 65,000 interviews from Americans in all 50 states, and has created one of the largest collections of human voices ever recorded.

Good News For Our Listeners In Johnstown

To our listeners and members in Johnstown, PA:

Over the last several months, you may have experienced difficulties with WESA's signal in Johnstown, due to technical issues with our equipment there.

We have been working throughout the summer to address this, and I am happy to report that yesterday, our Engineering team restored a clear and stable WESA signal to Johnstown. The solution required an investment in new technology and some time to install it, but if you tune to 100.5 fm now, I think you'll find a dramatic improvement in our service to you.

Longtime media executive Terry O’Reilly has been named president and CEO of Pittsburgh Community Broadcasting Corporation, owner of the FM radio stations 91.3 WYEP and 90.5 WESA. A veteran of commercial, entrepreneurial and public media, he will join PCBC on August 1, 2016.

Criminal (In)Justice -- New Podcast

PITTSBURGH—University of Pittsburgh legal scholar David A. Harris—a preeminent authority on issues related to racial profiling and police procedure—has developed a new podcast series titled Criminal (In)Justice.

Starting Friday February 12, 2016, 90.5 WESA will air The Pulse, a weekly program produced  by NewsWorks at WHYY in Philadelphia that focuses on stories at the heart of health, science, and innovation, in particular about the work to prevent disease, preserve energy, forestall death, develop treatments and build healthier cities. It will air on Fridays at 1 PM, with a rebroadcast at 9 PM. The Pulse is hosted by WHYY's Maiken Scott.   

Join the World Affairs Council and 90.5 WESA on Wednesday, February 10 at the Community Broadcast Center for a panel discussion on the beliefs and practices of Islam, which is practiced by 1.6 billion people around the world and is often misunderstood by non-Muslims. Hear from local Muslim community leaders as they share their unique perspectives and experiences about what it means to be Muslim, as well as challenges facing Muslims in America.
